Memorial weekend fun

Memorial day weekend is the unofficial kick off to summer and is the perfect time to be outside.   As you relax this Memorial day weekend, be sure to take advantage of the great weather. Do something outside to really appreciate the three-day weekend.

Our first suggestion is to either attend or host a barbecue. Nothing beats being outside with friends and family while eating some great food. Use this weekend to reconnect with anyone you haven't seen in a while. Set up a friendly tournament of bags (cornhole) and see who dominates the field.

This is for those lucky enough to have lake access, but take a ride out on a boat and enjoy the sun.  Not only is it a fun way to get some sun, you can get away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life.

Take a hike. No seriously, find a state park and explore your area to take in natural beauty.  Not only will you get exercise, you might find something unexpected in your area that you didn't know about before. Plus it doesn't require any equipment and is a great way to bond with the family.

No matter how you spend the weekend, just be sure to take time to understand Memorial day. It is important to remember the reason for the holiday, to think about the service men and women who gave their lives to protect this country and freedom. Rogan's Shoes supports our veterans and Memorial day.

Tips to keep your shoes fresh

Inevitably weather will happen and it will affect your shoes. It's either hot and your feet sweat or it's rainy and your feet get soaked. This makes for a case of stinky shoes.

This blog will hopefully help you out with the mishaps you encounter thanks to mother nature.

When it rains:

The first step is to take off your shoes

Next, take some of the old newspaper you have laying around in your house and stuff this down inside the shoe. This will help to soak up all the water. Leave them for at least a day, maybe longer depending on how soaked you got.

If you're worried about an odor in your shoes from being wet, place dry tea bags inside them. This will draw out the odor.

Other ways to take care of smelly shoes can be two fold. The first way is to take care of your feet and prevent the source of bacteria. Some ways of taking care of your feet include:

  • Put deodorant on your feet. This isn't the most conventional use but remember that your feet get sweaty too.
  • Use baby powder to help fight dampness in your foot.
  • Change your socks daily and make sure it is made of a natural material, such as cotton.
Some ways to fight the smell in your shoes includes:
  • Sprinkling baking soda to take care of the smell. You can do this every night after you take them off.
  • Replacing the insoles in your shoes with a deodorized sole will help.
  • Another weird but true way to get ride of smell is to put your shoe in a resealable bag and it in a freezer overnight.  This kills the bacteria in the shoe that causes the odor.
  • Don't be afraid to throw your shoes in the washer.  Just make sure you dry them out completely afterward.
  • Create a rotation of shoes.  Try not to wear the same pair of shoes in consecutive days.  This gives the shoes a chance to air out before the next time you wear them.
  • When you choose a new shoe, keep in mind what material it is made of. You want a shoe that allows your feet to breathe and avoid synthetic material.
Now you know how to fight foot odor and keep your shoes smelling pleasant.

DIY Pedicure

Looking for ways to cut back on your spending so that you can afford more shoes? Have you considered doing at home pedicures? Sandal season IS coming very soon, and the key to making a great sandal look even better is putting pretty, pampered feet inside them.

Use this blog as a resource for giving a DIY pedicure a try!

Step One:

The first step is to soak your feet in warm water. That's what they do when you go get a pedicure, right? Get yourself a package of Epsom Salts and add that to the warm water. The Epsom salts will help exfoliate your feet while they soak in the water. Soak your feet for about 10 minutes.

Step Two:

The next thing you'll want to do is exfoliate your feet more to remove any remaining dry skin and calluses. Take one foot out of the water and pat it dry with a towel. You can then use a pumice stone to remove cracks and dry skin. There are also callus shavers available at many discount stores that work well if you have thick calluses. There are also foot scrubs that you can purchase that will help with exfoliation as well. Once you're done with one foot you can put it back in the water and enjoy some more soaking, or you can leave it out while you work on the next one.

Step Three:

Next, you'll want to trim and file your nails to the desired length. By doing this after you've soaked your nails, you'll have given them time to soften so that it isn't quite as hard to clip and you'll have less nail breakage. Make sure when you're filing to only file in one direction to avoid nail splitting or damage.

Step Four:

After you've trimmed your nails, you'll want to push back your cuticles with a cuticle pusher and nourish your feet with lotion. After the lotion soaks in you'll be ready to paint your toes!

Step Five:

Slip into some sandals and show off your pretty toes! Be sure to regularly moisturize your feet afterwards to get some longevity out of your pedicure!
