Runner's Series Part 2 - Pick Your Running Shoe

After you have figured out what type of foot you have (click here to read our previous "Runner's Series" about how to find your foot type), you can then start looking at what type of running shoe to get. It is important to get the type of running shoe is directly related to the type of foot you have.
Choosing the correct type of shoe can be as challenging as choosing the color

Motion Control Running Shoes

Motion control running shoes are for those who have over-pronated or flat feet. Finding a motion control shoe is very important because the over-pronation transfers weight unnaturally and can cause potentially serious, long-lasting injuries. Motion control provides you with more support and stability. The last of a motion control shoe is generally straight, but can be semi-curved as well.

Cushioned Running Shoes

Cushioned running shoes are for those with supinated or high arched feet. If you have high arches, you have a lack of rotation in your foot when running, therefore, a lot of shock is absorbed not only in your feet, but in your joints as well. Cushioned shoes are the most flexible to allow for a more natural foot rotation. Extra cushioning helps absorb shock that can be harmful to your feet and legs. Cushioned shoes’ last is curved or semi-curved.

Stability Running Shoes

Stability running shoes are for those with neutral feet. If you have neutral feet you are considered to have normal foot action. A stability running shoe supports the natural motion of your foot. A stability shoe gives your foot support and cushion without altering your foot’s natural motion. It is important to wear stability or neutral running shoes because wearing another type of running shoe can alter your already normal foot motion and cause injury.

Lightweight Running Shoes

Lightweight running shoes are designed for speed by making them as light as possible. They are ideal if you are a sprinter or do fast-paced training. These shoes work well if you have neutral or slightly raised arches, but are not great if you have flat feet.

Trail Running Shoes

Trail running shoes have lug soles that are designed for off-road or trail running. You get added traction and most have toe bumpers for protection from rocks and sticks. Some are also waterproof to provide protection in wet conditions. They offer great stability and support for when you encounter uneven terrain.

These are the five basic types of running shoes. Remember, it is important to first find a running shoe that fits your foot type and then find a shoe that will suite your running activity or your running environment.
