Take a Hike in Proper Hiking Shoes


Better weather is on its way and if you love to go hiking through the woods and on trails, then you need proper shoes. Did you know that there are different types of shoes made for your certain hiking excursions? So keep reading and you'll find out which shoe you'll need!

Light hiking shoes: Low-cut models with flexible midsoles are perfect for a day hiking. If you are light-backpacking, these are good for long-distance journeys. It is said that 1 pound on your foot equals to 5 pounds on your back so whether this is true or not, traveling light feels better.

Running Injuries and Prevention

With Spring on the way, people can't wait to get outside again and start being active. People are starting the Spring sports season and getting back into shape. Are you an active runner? Then maybe your muscles will start feeling the pain as you start working out again. If you are in pain or are feeling sore, then you need to find out if you have an injury, what kind it is and how you can reduce or prevent further injury from happening.

Here is a list of common injuries caused by running:



Shin Splint:


Pain in the front or inside of the lower leg along the shin bone (tibia). Shin splints occur after a change in activity, such as running farther or increasing the number of days you run. 

      Most likely to get shin splints: People with flat feet.
      Treatment: 
         1. Rest
         2. Stretch
         3. Slow down activity after healing.

Muscle Pull:


This is a small muscle tear caused by over-stretching the muscle. You may feel a popping sensation as it tears. Hamstrings, quadriceps and calf are most commonly affected.

      Treatment:
         1. Rest
         2. Ice
         3. Compression
         4. Elevation

Plantar Fasciitis:


This is an inflammation of the plantar fascia which is the thick band of tissue in the bottom of the foot that extends from the heel to the toes. It may occur due to increased activity, but may occur with no identifiable reason.

      Treatment:
         1. Calf stretches
         2. Ice the bottom of the foot

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS):


This syndrome causes pain on the outside of the knee. It is a ligament that runs along the outside of the thigh, from the top of the hip to the outside of the knee and occurs when the ligament thickens and rubs on the knee bone, causing inflammation. If you run long distance, you have a higher chance of developing ITBS.

      Treatment:
         1. Decrease amount of exercise
         2. Heat and stretching before exercise
         3. Ice after exercise

Achilles Tendinitis:


This is inflammation of the Achilles tendon. This is the large tendon that attaches the calf to the back of the heel. You will know you have this if there is pain and stiffness in the area of the tendon or tight calf muscles. It is caused by repetitive stress due to increasing running distance.

      Treatment:
         1. Rest
         2. Icing the area
         3. Calf stretches

Tips to Prevent these Injuries:



By taking precaution, you can prevent these common injuries.
  • Listen to your body: Don't ignore pain. If there is consistent pain that doesn't get better with rest, see your health care provider. 
  • Create a running plan: Talking to a trainer will help you make a plan right for you and how much fitness you can handle.
  • Warm-up and stretch: Do this before and after exercise. (Especially your calf, hamstrings, and quadriceps)
  • Wear proper shoes! Wear proper-fitting socks and shoes with good support. If  the soles of your current running shoes are worn thin, it's time to get a new pair! (Here at Rogan's of course!)

Spring is on the way! Break out your running shoes!

Ready for warmer Spring weather? Well it's coming! And that means we can start being active again and get outside. But wait! Don't forget your running shoes! With so many shoes to choose from, it can be hard to decide which one will be the best for you. From lightweight, flexible shoes to the traditional, heavy cushioned shoes, how do you determine which one to buy? The answer is based on how you run.



Here is a more traditional, heavy cushioned running shoe. These shoes are mostly for heel-to-toe strikers. This means that as you run, your heel hits the ground first. It is cushioned from the heel and then to the mid and front part of the shoe to protect your foot from impact. Like this shoe? It is our Women's Avia A5360 Running Shoe!





Here is a newer, lightweight, flexible running shoe. These have minimal cushioning along the bottom. If you compare these two shoes, take a look at the heel on both of them. Protect your shoes from the snow!

Have you ever stepped into a puddle of water, stomped through the slushy snow, or walked on salted sidewalks? Well then you must know the damage this has done to your shoes. Leather and suede are the most commonly affected by snow and water. If you want to protect your shoe from these elements or want to fix your shoes' current condition, then here are some tips to help!

                               Use a waterproof protectant. 
                                  There are two kinds: Creams/oils and Spray

To apply the cream and oil, use a dry cloth to apply and let it sit for up to an hour to wipe again to remove excess. Creams have advantages and disadvantages over using spray waterproof protectant. Creams and oils condition the leather but might change the color of the shoes slightly or create a layer of buildup. However sprays may not be as effective because they aren't being worked into your shoes. 

     Tips:
  1. Understand the material your shoes are made of. Waterproofing for suede is different than leather. Using a leather spray on a suede shoe can ruin the shoe.
  2. Once you have the right spray, clean your shoes. You don't want to seal in dirt!
  3. Cover up anything on the shoe you don't want sprayed because it might change the color of it!
  4. Let shoes dry and weatherproof your shoes once a year to keep protecting!
Give your shoes some love so you can keep wearing them!

Wedges or Heels: Which do you prefer?

You are shoe shopping and you see these two shoes next to each other and you stop and wonder which one to choose. Here are some things to think about before you decide:
  • Think about where you will be wearing the shoes. Are you going to be outside? Then maybe a safe bet would be to choose the wedges. Why? Walking in grass with heels can be a difficult task. The heel can get stuck into the ground every step you take. Another example is going to a beach wedding perhaps. Walking in sand will be very hard if you are in heels. Wedges have somewhat of a flat surface that will deal better in these types of situations.
  • Do heels give a more glamorous, elegant look? While wedges are more casual and can be worn as a summer sandal? What do you think? You decide!
  • Wedges are considered to be more comfortable because your entire body weight can rest upon the shoe. Ever walk in heels and the heel breaks? Or as you walk, the heel wobbles off and you twist your ankle? Just some things to consider!
  • Some say that wearing heels provide a long lean look that makes your legs look longer. So why add bulk when wearing wedges? Do you think this is true?
