Sperry Boat Shoes History!

The trend is back! Who loves a good boat shoe? WE DO! But what we didn't know is the history behind the shoe... so we found out! Read more if you are a boat-shoe lover!

The Sperry Top-Sider is the original brand of boat shoe designed in 1935  by Paul Sperry. Sperry was a boater, and like most boaters, they risk injury while walking on the slippery deck of a boat. He got the idea of the boat shoe after noticing his dog's ability to run easily over ice without slipping. So the boat shoe was made with a herringbone pattern of grooves on the sole to maximize traction.

In 1939, the U.S Navy negotiated the right to manufacture the shoe for its sailors. As a result of the Navy contract, Sperry sold his business to the U.S Rubber Co., which marketed the shoe across the country.

Did you know this? Boat shoes are traditionally worn without socks. Do you wear socks with yours?

Which boat shoe do you like best?
