How to Properly Fit Kids Shoes

When it comes to fitting a shoe to your child’s feet it can be difficult. You want to make sure that the shoe fits just right to avoid improper fit that could hurt your child’s feet in the future. The goal is to find a shoe that supports your child’s foot, allows for growth and feel comfortable. As a parent, you will need to choose the right fit for your child over the ones that they like the best. This will just ensure that the child will always be getting the right fit regardless of their favorite one. However, consider that they will look nice and not make you child not want to wear them.

When it comes to properly fitting your child’s shoes, you should follow these five easy steps!

Step 1: In order to properly fit your child’s feet into a pair of comfortable shoes, you will first have to measure them. This can be done a number of ways. However, the way that seems to work the best would be to use a tape measure, when doing it yourself at home. You can use a tape measure to measure your child’s feet. This can be done by measuring from their big toe to their heel and then also their width. Use those measurements to get the size. If you decided to go into a shoe store, ask a store employee to measure your child’s feet with a Brannock device for you.

Step 2: You want to make sure that the shoe fits comfortably for your child. You want to have about half an inch between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. This allows space for comfort and space to grow. To do this, have your child stand up and you will want to apply gentle pressure to the top of the shoe to check the toe is not pressing against the end of the shoe.
Step 3: The next area you want to check for comfort is the heel and ankle.  You should not be able to fit one finger in between your child’s heel and the back of the shoe.  If you can fit your finger, this could cause friction from your foot moving around in the shoe which can lead to blisters.

Step 4: Next you should feel along each side of the shoes with your hand. When doing this, you should not feel any pressure or bulging at the sides and the widest part of the foot should be in the widest part of the shoe, if the shoe fits correctly.

Step 5: Finally, ask your child to walk in the shoes. They should be able to walk easily and their walk should be a natural as possible. The shoe should not be slipping off of the heel and there should be no excessive gaping at the sides.
