Winterizing Your Shoes

It's November but before you know it snow will be on the ground and your shoes will  be unprotected.  With the moisture from snow and slush, along with salt being used everywhere, your shoes will take some punishment. But have no fear, we have tips to help preserve your shoes as much as possible during the winter season.

If you have a canvas shoe, you can waterproof it with some beeswax and make the snow deflect right off your foot.  It is a simple and effective way to preserve your canvas shoes for the winter, To see the original post, click here.

Another tip to keep in mind during the winter is to clean off the salt from your shoes. This can ruin leather, and also leave salt marks on your boots. You can check out our post from earlier this month to fight those pesky salt marks. GQ Magazine suggests that you use a water and white vinegar mix to clean. Salt marks can make your shoes and boots look much more ragged than they are.

For winter runners, invest in some waterproof shoes to help make your runs more comfortable in the outdoors.  While they may be heavier, running in wet shoes is often more uncomfortable. You may want to think about how the ankle is protected too in winter running.  The Asics GT-2000 GTX for women is a shoe that offers a lightweight option while providing a waterproof shoe.

Prevention is one of the biggest things you can do for your shoe to make sure it makes it through the winter season. You can also purchase sprays or kits to help protect your shoes. Be sure to check out our online selection to find waterproof shoes at

How To: Remove Salt Stains from Shoes

Nobody really wants it to happen, and nobody really looks forward to this time of the year, but soon enough the snow will be here. While the snow brings great adventures and outdoor activities for people of all ages, it also brings some of the not so nice things like shoveling our driveways, and salt on the roads. All the salt that is spread during the winter wreaks havoc on shoes and causes staining on the surface, ruining the appearance before winter is even halfway over. Read below to see how to remove the salt stains from your shoes to keep them looking as good as you do all winter long and to make them last longer, too!

  • What you will need:
    • 1 cup cold water
    • 1 tablespoon vinegar
    • cotton towel
    • small cup
  1. Combine the water and vinegar and mix well
  2. Get the towel wet with the mixture and wipe down the shoe surface
  3. Let the shoes dry (make sure this is done in a natural way, such as air drying because applying artificial heat could cause the leather to crack)
  4. If all of the stains didn't come off on the first try, repeat the steps until they come clean

  •  What you will need:
    • 1 cup of water
    • 1/2 tsp. dish soap
    • old toothbrush
    • small cup
    • clean cloth (2)
    • white vinegar
  1. Mix the two ingredients together in a small cup stirring to create soap suds
  2. Use the the toothbrush to put the suds onto the stained areas of the Uggs and scrub well.
  3. Use the clean cloth with plain water on it and remove the salt residue and soap
  4.  Use another clean cloth dipped into the white vinegar and rub over stains that still remain after using the soap suds
  5. Wipe off any remaining materials on the boots with a damp cloth

  • What you will need:
    • clean cloth (2)
    • white vinegar
    • suede brush or soft terry-cloth towel
  1. Blot the suede with cloth dipped in the vinegar
  2. Use the other cloth to blot the suede dry
  3. Brush the suede once dry in a circular motion until the fabric looks new

A couple more handy tips:

  • Did the wet snow soak through your boots giving you wet feet as well? After you've dumped the water out of your boots (if there is a puddle), remove any insoles that aren't permanent and place several sheets of newspaper into the entire foot area of the boot and let sit overnight. The newspaper will soak up the water, and when the insides are dry, you can simply throw out (reduce, reuse, recycle) the newspaper. Depending on the dampness of the inside of your boots, it may take more than one night or set of newspaper sheets to completely dry the insides.
  • When you buy a new pair of suede boots, moccasins or any other type of suede shoe (including Uggs) also purchase something to weatherproof your shoes. The easiest thing to do is purchase a spray can of weatherproofing solution. Spray it evenly onto the entire surface of your shoes and let dry completely before wearing. This will make it so water doesn't sit on the surface of your shoes and keep them looking nicer, longer.
