Memory Foam Update--the New Trend in Comfort

Back in June we wrote about Memory Foam in shoes; and mostly in athletic shoes. Since then, memory foam has spread into all areas of footwear from work shoes to dress shoes and everything in between. While Skechers still remains the primary player in the Memory Foam game, brands like Saucony, Asics, K-Swiss, Carolina, Lugz and Keen have come into play.  As you can see in the photos below, the styles and brands have become quite diverse!

The benefits of memory foam are quite large. By having a memory foam insole in your shoes, you get a customized support system and cushion. The natural body heat that you emit warms up the hardened foam insole. By warming it up, it becomes softer and allows it to mold to the arch and pressure points in your feet. Another benefit of having a memory foam insole is that it makes your shoe more light weight! Having a lighter shoe helps keep you on your feet longer.  Another shoe that does something similar is a cork soled shoe similar to a Birkenstock. The difference is that a cork shoe does not bounce back whereas a memory foam insole will after use. Finally, a memory foam insole comes with a built in guide as to when it’s time to replace your shoes! Eventually, the memory foam will lose its resiliency. When it does this, that means it is time to replace your shoes!

Safety Toe Cap Designs

Over the past decade safety footwear development has brought a variety of safety cap designs into the market.  In response to a series of questions from both staff and customers I would like to offer a quick overview of the designs and materials used in safety toe caps.

Generally speaking there are three basic toe cap designs (shapes);  standard, oblique and asymmetrical. Most caps fall under what I refer to as standard design.  These designs tend to have a rounded appearance and depending on the individuals foot provide adequate space for fitting.  Oblique or square toe designs give the footwear a more box like look.  Often such designs are associated with composite materials.  These oblique styles afford significantly more room than a standard design and are useful for fitting feet with a wider forefoot.  Asymmetrical designs are unique and fairly new to the market.   These caps are formed to the shape of the forefoot and as a result there are actually left and right toe caps.  In all other designs there is only one cap for both feet.   These caps tend to offer the best fit for most feet.
The materials used in safety toe caps can vary greatly.  Although steel tends to still be the most common materials light weight metal alloys and composite materials are becoming more common.  All of the materials used can meet the ASTM rating but please make sure that you buy a name brand and that the necessary ratings are marked in the footwear.  It should be rated F2413-11 C75  I75.
Light weight alloys have been the most recent arrival to the market.  Whether they are a titanium/steel blend or aluminum alloy they offer a lighter weight option to the steel and in the case of the titanium blend they are a thinner stronger cap allowing for more toe room.  They still retain some of the disadvantages of steel, however.  They are still metal and as a result conduct heat, cold and electricity.   Composite materials are perhaps the most interesting.   They are made from a mixture of resin and fiberglass which in turn makes them light, about 1/3 the weight of steel, and they do not transfer cold or electricity.   They are convenient for those who travel via air frequently or work at facilities with metal detectors.  Composite caps also have memory.  That is to say they have some ability to return to their original shape.  A trait that metals do not have, hence they are able to be deformed and dented.  Should this happen it may make the footwear unwearable.  Composites may offer many traits that are desired but the material is not as strong as metal.  This means that the caps must be more robust than metal ones to achieve the standard.  This fact can lead to fitting issues as the thicker cap can be restricting even in an oblique design.
As with all aspects of safety footwear you should choose the best material for the job and the best design for your foot.  If you can, seek advice and guidance from your reputable local safety footwear provider.

Winter Running Tips

Just because the snow has started to fall does not mean your outdoor runs have to stop! Yes, transitioning to the gym to rack up the miles is definitely an option, but if you want to stay outdoors, here are some tips to help keep you safe.

Clothing
First of all, the clothing you wear is important, for very obvious reasons. It's cold outside so you need something that will protect you from the elements. Layers are good. Very good. You might want to consider a base layer that has moisture wicking properties to keep you comfortable. Something like the black Under Armour compression shirt below is a great option. The next layer on top of that is there mostly for insulation. The CB_WM6411_RED1final layer will block the wind from chilling you to the bone. The red Columbia jacket features a thermal reflective lining to ensure warmth.   It’s also important to provide warmth to your head and hands since that’s where most of your body heat escapes from. Thick socks are great for keeping your feet warm as well. Covering your mouth will help to protect your lungs and respiratory system in the cold.

Shoes
While mesh shoes are great, you’ll probably want to stay away from them when you’re running outdoors. Mesh shoes give ventilation to your feet, you don’t want the chill of winter coming in to your shoes. Grab some mostly leather running shoes for winter and stick to mesh in the spring and summer. The women’s New Balance or men’s Puma are great options.

PM_30502602_XRD2NB_W587_WHT2

Running Behavior
Before you hit the road running, make sure you give your body a good warm up. Going into the cold with cold muscles is how injuries happen. Warm up and loosen up indoors while focusing on dynamic stretches. While you’re running make sure to stay hydrated, like with any workout. You might feel cold but you’re still sweating. Stick to a route you know well and that is well lit. The more lights, the easier it is for you to be seen on dark mornings and for you to see the ice below the feet.  Sporty Girl Quenching Her Thirst

Motivation
Snow, cold air, early mornings; they’re all reasons to be unmotivated and say “maybe tomorrow” to your run. Find a reason to run. Whether it’s training for your first spring run or working off the Thanksgiving pie and holiday desserts.

Happy trails to you!

Have a Safe Hike!

forest-trail_MJ1ZSwY_edited

Fall is one of the most popular seasons for taking a hike, and we don't blame you! From the leaves changing colors to the new smells and cooler temps so you don't overheat, it's almost perfection. Here's some tips to help you and your family prepare for your hike and stay safe on the trails.

There is a fair amount of planning that should happen before your trip even happens. Here's a few items The American Hiking Society recommends you have with you:
  • A map and compass or GPS so you know where you're going and how to get back if you get lost
  • Water (and extra water) should go without explanation, but without water your body and muscles become dehydrated, leaving you thirsty and unable to perform properly.
  • Food to help you keep up your energy. Sacks that are high in protein are your best bet for energy and recovery out on the trails.
  • Layers and rain gear because the temperature can change unexpectedly depending on your location, altitude and the weather forecast.
  • A flashlight, whistle, fire and first aid kit for unplanned emergencies. You never know when injury, unexpected chills in the air or getting lost is going to happen. Rather be safe than sorry.
  • Knife...just in case.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses because it's important to protect your skin and your eyes from the sun, especially when you will be out all day.
hiker-hiking-frnt-mountains-circ-051214

As important as it is to have the right equipment, it's also important to have a good backpack and have it packed properly. If you're planning on spending a night in nature, it's important to pack your sleeping bag at the bottom of your backpack. Heavy items should be stored near the top of the bag against the back. This will help you maintain your center of gravity, improving posture and your balance. Items that will be used frequently or in an emergency, such as water, snacks and a flashlight should be stored in easy access spots such as outside zippers or pouches. Put extra clothing and electronics such as your cell phone into plastic zip up bags so if you get wet those items will stay dry. If possible, find a waterproof bag or waterproof your pack yourself. This will help to keep everything safe and reduce the weight.

ME_98330_BRN1_editedThere are a couple varieties of hiking boots that are designed to match up with your adventures. If you're planning on going for a day hike, you will most likely be fine with trail shoes or hiking shoes like the Men's Merrell Yokota Trail shoes (left). These shoes feature a low cut silhouette and a flexible midsole. Another great option for a day hike is a trail running shoe if you're looking for a little less bulk on your feet. Hiking boots come in mid and high cut ankles to provide you with more support for longer adventures. If you're planning a weekend ME_48322_BRN1_editedhiking trop or a day hike with a pack, this style of boot will be your best option. These boots usually require being broken in, so it is important that you purchase your shoes well enough in advance to allow for that process. Waterproof boots like this Women's Merrell Salida Mid (right) are always a great option because they will keep your feet dry. Your hiking boots can be made from a variety of textiles including leather for a durable, water resistant quality, synthetics that dry more quickly and tend to run on the less expensive side and waterproof as mentioned before to keep you dry. As with any shoe, it’s best to try them on at the store at the end of the day whenever possible. Your feet swell as the day goes on, and trying shoes on at the end of the day helps prevent the purchase of shoes that are simply too small. Finally, be sure to break your boots in before heading out on the trail. Wear them around your house, taking them up and down stairs and on an incline if possible. If you feel any signs of discomfort, they’re probably not the right boot for you.

Womens Dress Boots, Then and Now

Fall is almost here, and that means it's time to break out the fashionable boots or head to the stores for some new ones. Over the years, boot styles have changed quite drastically. Or maybe not much at all. What do you think?

Then:

*image taken from http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com

The boots above represent styles from 1912. As you can see, most of the boot styles feature a button up style and box, or square toes. The heels are relatively the same height, shape and style. Even though this picture is black and white, it's probably true that the coloring of these boots is not much different.

Now:

Today, there are so many options of boots. There's dressy ones, casual ones, winter and snow boots, tall boots, short boots, mid calf boots, and the list goes on and on. Buttons are typically used today as accents or finishing touches, not as a means to give you a secure fit. Instead, zippers were put into place. Many more brands, colors, styles and price ranges are available today than there used to be as well.

At Rogan's Shoes in particular, we offer women’s dress boots in many different styles from short to tall and pull on to lace up. Back in 1912 you would not have seen that many different styles much less colors or patterns. We haven't just changed the height of the shaft on a boot, however. Heel heights and design has changed as well. With heights ranging from nothing to upwards of 3 and 4 inches, you can get the perfect look for any occasion. The materials that boots are made of have also changed. While some boots still feature patent leather or a shiny upper, many now come in textile (cloth or fabric) uppers. Some boots even feature fur trim! Options for customizing the fit has become increasingly popular, leading to more buckles and straps on the sides. It has also made it popular for elastic panels to be added at the instep of short boots, and the back of the calf on tall boots. Some of the special characteristics of Women’s Dress Boots today is that they now include wide calf boots and lace up boots (typically called combat boots).

What is your favorite style of boots to wear? Are you a lace up combat boot kinda girl? Or a pull on knee high and tights kinda girl?

Bump, Set, Spike!

Volleyball season is coming soon (or already here for some). Do you have the right gear?

We just wanted to take a brief moment to share some tips for this season so you can bump, set and spike your way to victory.

Tip #1
Volleyball shoes are not the same as running, training or basketball shoes. While volleyball shoes usually look very similar to other styles of athletic shoes, especially running and training shoes, they are constructed to specifically help you perform better on the court. The outsole on a volleyball shoe is made from a gum rubber sole material which will give you better traction on the gym floor. In a volleyball shoe, the midsole support is in the ball of the foot and allows for lateral movement instead of forward movement.

Tip #2
Volleyball shoes are not meant to be worn off of the court. Gum rubber is a soft material. If you wear them on abrasive surfaces, the soles will wear out very quickly, and you probably won't make it through the season with just the one pair of shoes.

Tip #3
Volleyball shoes are not meant to last longer than one season under regular wear. If it is worn almost every day out of the week for practices or games, you will most likely not get more than one season out of them.

Tip #4
If the sides by the ankle become weaker and you lose traction in the shoe, it is time to replace them.

Tip #5
Volleyball shoes should fit snug, not tight to the foot. You should not be able to move your foot inside the shoe, even though the shoe is flexible enough to move with you. A finger width should be what is between the tip of your toes and the tip of the shoe.

Now that you know a little bit more about how your shoes should fit and how they differ from other shoes, take a look at our selection of womens volleyball shoes.

Do you have more tips to share? What are some of your favorite volleyball shoes that we sell?

Touchdown!

Back to school shopping means that Fall is right around the corner, and Fall means that it is time for some FOOTBALL! We carry a range of football cleats for boys and men, so you're sure to find the perfect pair for them to play under the Friday night lights. Before buying a pair of football cleats, there are a few things to keep in mind including the style of the shoe, the type of cleats and the materials the shoes are made of. We may not be able to teach you how to get a touchdown, but we can teach you how to get the right cleats.

Style

There are 3 different styles of football cleats: high-tops, mid-cut and low-cut. High-tops feature a taller collar shaft, which will provide you with more support during lateral movement. Typically, linemen benefit from the purchase of a high-top styled shoe. A mid-cut cleat style will give you increased ankle support without restricting your movement, making it perfect for positions such as defensive backs, running backs, quarterbacks and wide receivers. A low-cut cleat style gives you a lightweight fit. This style will provide you with the ability to move easily and change movements rapidly.

Cleats

There are 2 different kinds of cleats: molded and detachable. The type of cleat that is right for you depends primarily on the type of surface you're going to be playing on the most. A molded cleat is permanently attached to the shoe. Molded rubber is typically used on turf shoes to give better spring to the step. A detachable cleat features studs that can be removed, allowing you to replace them if they break, or change them out when you switch field surfaces. Shorter studs work best with dry or hard surfaces, and longer studs work best for wet or squishy fields.

Material

Finally, the material the upper portion of the shoe is made of should be taken into consideration. Football cleats are typically made from either leather or a synthetic material. Leather allows your feet to breathe better and provides more flexibility. Leather is more durable, but that comes with a price. A synthetic material helps cut the cost of the shoes, but doesn't give you quite as much ability for the feet to breathe or durability. Synthetic materials can be found on almost all shoes as accents and areas for support.

Fit tips

Football cleats should fit tightly. Not so tight that you feel like the the hulk when he gets angry, but tight enough so that you can experience all the benefits and support a football cleat provides. If it isn't comfortable when you first put it on, odds are they're probably never going to be comfortable enough. The shoes will break in a little bit, but not much. After purchasing a new pair of cleats, it's important to break them in slowly, as to not irritate your feet. Start by wearing them in around the house for a bit. When you're sure you've found the right ones, it's time to take them to the field! You'll want to make sure to only wear them for a fraction of practice to begin with, and slowly increase the time you wear them until you work your way up to wearing them all practice.

Now that you know how to pick them, it's time to start shopping! You can see our whole selection of boys and girls football cleats at our website; we carry a variety of brands and styles including Adidas, Nike, Under Armour and Reebok.

Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer

Got back to school shopping on the brain? While retail stores fill their shelves with pencils, markers, notebooks and binders, you may start to think that summer is almost over. Wrong! There is still plenty of sun to be soaked up and fun to be had.

Puma Narita V2 Running Shoes

This shoe screams summer fun to us. Just because it is a running shoe doesn't mean you have to go running in it. The pretty pastel teal and pink combined with the fun, textured white creates a look that somewhat resembles some kind of ice cream truck or something, right? In all seriousness though, this shoe is a perfect choice to pair with your summer wardrobe, or to wear to the gym. We love this shoe. This is perfect for a trip to the zoo, running errands, working out or a day at an amusement park.

Isola Carlota Dress Shoe

Have a nice dinner that you have to attend, but it's blistering hot out? Try a shoe that provides you with tons of ventilation. (Plus it will show off your killer pedicure that you just got at the salon, or gave yourself with our DIY pedicure suggestions...) This shoe offers a mixture of colors and textures that will make any sun dress look even more amazing. This style would also be great for wearing to the office with a dress or even some dress pants!

Clarks Perri Coast Sandals

Needing to get some errands done with the kids? Try a comfortable, cute sandal. This sandal is available in two different colors and will allow you to tackle your way through your to-do list without having to sacrifice style. You can dress this sandal up with jean shorts and a fun top on a trip to the mall, or wear it with your running shorts and t shirt as you head to the grocery store. The padded footbed helps to make sure you're going to stay on your feet all day!

Have some women's shoes that you've been wearing all summer? What are they? We would love to hear.
