Womens Dress Boots, Then and Now

Fall is almost here, and that means it's time to break out the fashionable boots or head to the stores for some new ones. Over the years, boot styles have changed quite drastically. Or maybe not much at all. What do you think?

Then:

The boots above represent styles from 1912. As you can see, most of the boot styles feature a button up style and box, or square toes. The heels are relatively the same height, shape and style. Even though this picture is black and white, it's probably true that the coloring of these boots is not much different.

Now:

Today, there are so many options of boots. There's dressy ones, casual ones, winter and snow boots, tall boots, short boots, mid calf boots, and the list goes on and on. Buttons are typically used today as accents or finishing touches, not as a means to give you a secure fit. Instead, zippers were put into place. Many more brands, colors, styles and price ranges are available today than there used to be as well.

At Rogan's Shoes in particular, we offer women’s dress boots in many different styles from short to tall and pull on to lace up. Back in 1912 you would not have seen that many different styles much less colors or patterns. We haven't just changed the height of the shaft on a boot, however. Heel heights and design has changed as well. With heights ranging from nothing to upwards of 3 and 4 inches, you can get the perfect look for any occasion. The materials that boots are made of have also changed. While some boots still feature patent leather or a shiny upper, many now come in textile (cloth or fabric) uppers. Some boots even feature fur trim! Options for customizing the fit has become increasingly popular, leading to more buckles and straps on the sides. It has also made it popular for elastic panels to be added at the instep of short boots, and the back of the calf on tall boots. Some of the special characteristics of Women’s Dress Boots today is that they now include wide calf boots and lace up boots (typically called combat boots).

What is your favorite style of boots to wear? Are you a lace up combat boot kinda girl? Or a pull on knee high and tights kinda girl?
